NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949.

The NATO headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, and the organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

The tension of the world through 1950s and 1960s, between the Free countries and the Communisit countries was very high.

This trend was particulary strong in Europe that I strongly felt when I lived in Germany in my childhood.

NATO’s initial intention was to get the US to compete in the ally against the Soviet Union and the Eastern countries.

There are currently 28 member states of NATO, with the most recent being Albania and Croatia who joined in April 2009.

Recently, I had a chance to have a dinnder meeting with a foreigner who has lived in Japan for more than 20 years.

He referred to the relationship of the countries in NATO and was speaking about his opinion that Japan should put more efforts to defense its own country rather than depending 100 percent on the US military.

He was also stressing that the Japanese people should be more aware of the importance of defending their country.

He concluded that it was because of the lack of the mind of the current politician of Japan who never speak out loud about the importance of defending its own country by its own force.

He ended his talking by saying

You know what? The Japanese politicians are NATO and this is fatal.”

I asked

What in the world do you mean?”

He winked and said

“The politicians are No(N) Action(A) Talk(T) Only(o), NATO!

I liked his joke but as a practical matter, the nation have to build up more cocrete concept to clarify Japan’s position in the world

We can not rely on to the politicians.

Nothing will be changed unless we stand up.

No more NATO and we have to take action.
